Abby Hammes, PhD, RN-BC, is a board-certified nurse with two decades of experience in clinical nursing, research, and health policy. Abby has a close understanding of the challenges patients and families face when trying to navigate complicated systems of care.
Most recently, Abby worked with families of children with complex medical needs, helping to close the gaps that caregivers often experience in their child’s care. Prior to that, she was a Program & Policy Analyst with the Wisconsin Department of Health Services where she operationalized statewide policy, programmatic workflows, and quality standards to ensure consistent service delivery across Wisconsin.

Abby earned her PhD in Nursing from UW–Madison and has extensive experience as a nurse case manager in inpatient, ambulatory, and home health settings, coordinating care for patients of all ages. Her research centers on family caregivers and the policies and programs that shape their access to care, work that closely aligns with CPP’s vision of a healthcare system everyone can access, understand, and afford.

Abby lives in Madison with her family and her dog, Samson.
